Alchemy Mod

This mod adds more functionality to the Alchemy skilline by adding potions (spell effects in a bottle!) and weapon oils (item enchantments in a bottle!) and afew other items to the game. Those Effects are timed and scaled based on Alchemy skill. They are blanced in a way so that a priest does not become useless. Generally a priest gets high casts pretty early while an alchemist gets 5 minutes of an effect with the power being the QL of the item, which again is limited by various factors.

Getting Started

how to craft a phial

To get your Journey as alchemist started, you first need to get your Natural Substances and Alchemy skills to level 5.

Then its time for you to craft your first tools of the Trade:

A phial mould
First you should craft a flask mould. You will need flasks made from crystal glass to store the magic energies of the potions. For that you will need a pottery flask and some clay.
The quality of your mould is determined by the clay quality and your pottery skill. Dont forget to fire your mould!

The glass mixture
Crystaline glass has good magical storing properties and guarantees that your potions have the oomph needed to actually make their effects work.
You can craft glass mixture by mixing it with ash and salt. The quality of the glass as well of the salt and the ash will determine the quality of your glass mixture.
Heating up the glass mixture will turn it into glass. Keep your glass hot if you want to work with it!

Your very first phial
You have a mould, you have a glass mixture, now its time to make your first phial! Take the hot glass and combine it with your phial mould to create a crystal phial.

Alchemical compound
to activate the magical properties of natural substances you will need to make alchemical compound. You will use it often! first you need purified water. Depending on the world you are on this might be achieved by first making a coal filter and letting water through it, or by boiling drinking water in a cauldron. Salt water might reduce to salt before it is purified. Then you will need the heart of any creature. Together these two substances will form 1L of alchemical compound. The nature of these two materials makes the compound deteriorate fast. Best practice is to prepare the base ingredients and only mix them together before making potions. The quality of the heart and your natural substances skill will determine the quality of your compound.

Potions

a simple mixture
Get Cooking! (Your first Potion)
For this part your knowledge about natural substances should be around 10.
Now you need something to fill in the phial. Start with a potion mixture. I've heard carrots and potatoes are not only good for a stew but also for a brew!
Alone those to ingredients are a salad at best. You have to mix them with alchemical compound to activate their magical properties. This will give you a potion precursor.
Finally, if you cook your precursor in a cauldron, it will turn into a potion liquid which you can fill with your phial with. The crystaline glass will activate and store the magic properties for a long period of time.
The potions quality and thus power depends on the quality of the phial and of the potion liquid.
Both mixtures and precursor liquids are very volatile and degrade fast. Best make them fresh every time.

how to craft a potion

If you are not good with Natural Substances you might get a herbalist to make the mixture for you and then continue the potion making process from there. You will still get some basic skill in natural substances from exploring how to turn the mixture into a potion.

Many potions can be made this way and in order of difficulty (of the mixtures) are
  • Potion of Refreshing
  • Potion of Morning Fog
  • Potion of Healing
  • Potion of Goatshape
  • Potion of Sixth Sense
  • Potion of Truehit
  • Potion of Surpassing
  • Potion of Phasing
  • Potion of Frenzy
  • Potion of Woodskin
  • Potion of Mana
  • Potion of Strength
  • Potion of Karma
  • Potion of Knowledge

Addiction and Toxicity

Everytime you consume a potion the rush of magical energies will cause a small withdrawal effect on your body a short time Later. At early stages nothing might happen, but the effects will get worse and worse. When you are deeply addicted you might want to consume another potion to get rid of the withdrawal, but your addiction will go deeper. This way you can postpone the negative effects of your addiction until you are safe. After around 15 minutes this with drawal begins to reduce slowly. Or Maybe you can find someone who can make a potion against addictions?

Toxicity

At the same time the potions magicks are somewhat toxic to your body, so you cant consume them one after one. If you try to do just that you might end up with a sever internal poison wound. If you are adept with healing you might survive. If you are already somewhat hurt you will outright die. Stacking to Potion effects comes with a price, and this is it. But then again it might turn the tides when fighting a difficult enemy.

The time that decides how long you must wait until you can drink another potion is decided through the configuration. Some Potions may have their own timers though which will inform you accordingly.

Addiction Details

An addiction is not a on/off thing. You will probably not even notice your addiction at low levels. Once you surpass a certain threshold you will notice problems. Withdrawal effects only start to appear if you come down from your addiction, never when you are deepening it. The addiction is always lingering in the background, you have lended yourself the power of the world, now its time to pay with your body.

With drawal effects can include
  • Weak legs (very slow movement speed)
  • Internal Chest and Head wounds of varying severity (more addiction = larger wounds)
  • Poison Head Wounds

Generally coming down from addiction that was very deep is a tedious process that requires a good a mount of medical attention.
Addiction is Invisible! You have to track yourself how many potions you drank and can drink. You will get a feedback message in your Event Window when drinking the first few potions and when coming down from the addiction.
LOGGING OUT WILL HALT YOUR ADDICTION AND WONT HELP IN GETTING RID OF IT!

Oils

The way to make a weapon oil

Oils work like potions but by using fats instead of purified water. The fats turn the good qualities of a potion into negative qualities. So to make any oil, you first need to make a potion mixture, and then taint it by adding fat and other ingredients, thus creating a paste.
Take a healing mixture for example: if you add animal fat to it, it will taint and become a mixture of leech, thus enabling the user to draw health instead of giving it.
Oils are stored in phials like potions. The quality of the oil is dependent on the Quality of the paste and the alchemical compound.

Oils work as weapon coatings. You can smear them on your weapon, or dip your arrows into them (or pour the whole bottle into a quiver). Pouring the entire flask over a weapon is quite wasteful, hmm how would a blacksmith add polishing oil to a weapon?
The oil will work as a temporary enchantment on your weapon and will stick with other enchantments. After five minutes, the magicks of the oil will vanish.

Furthermore, since the coating of an oil is bound to the magick of the world, it will lose its power when...
  • the weapon is near a portal
  • the weapon is in a mailbox
  • the weapon is dropped on the ground
  • the weapon is traded
  • the weapon is near the world border
  • the owner of the weapon is leaving the world

The first Oils become available at 30 Natural Substances Skill (or Alchemy depending on the config) and range in difficulty at this order...
  • Oil of the Hunter / Oil of the Monster Hunter
  • Oil of the Heartseeker / Oil of the Murderer
  • Froskiss Oil / Lick of Flames Oil
  • Oil of the Legendary Hunter / Venom Oil
